Silicone is in most of the skincare products you grab off the shelf. While in certain medical cases, they are a fantastic resource, they tend to do quite the opposite to you and your skin when it comes to your skincare routine.
For the sake of making more informed decisions for the health of your skin, here are 6 reasons why silicones need to be removed from your skin care regimen ASAP!
Reason #1: products with silicone leave residue on your skin even after washing with soap.
Scientifically, silicone as an element is hydrophobic, meaning they repel water. When it comes to your skin, having a product that does not absorb water prevents you from having clean skin (which is one of the main reasons you invest in skincare).
Reason #2: silicones can cause breakouts
As they are hydrophobic and prevent water from entering your skin, they also keep dirt and bacteria under a protective layer (this poses a greater concern if you are prone to acne and breakouts).
Reason #3: silicone products prevent active ingredients from reaching your skin
The protective layer created by silicones can also harm your skin by blocking the active ingredients in your skin care routine from entering your pores and doing the actual work. As a reminder, skin active ingredients are what you want to look for in skincare products, especially if there is a high concentration of them. If the skin active ingredients cannot enter the skin, the product is useless, and you might simply be wasting your money.
Reason #4: silicones are not eco-friendly
Silicones are bioaccumulative, meaning that once the products are washed off into your drain, they build up sludge pollution in our oceans and waterways.
Reason #5: silicone-based products are essential "fluff"
Silicones are used as “fluff” ingredients inside the bottle of your skincare, doing nothing for the overall health of your skin. Inactive ingredients may look or feel good but do not clean your skin. Worse yet, some skincare lines actually itemize silicone (and all its variations) as an active ingredient.
Reason #6: the benefits of silicones are only superficial
Silicones are a great way to have superficial improvement, but they will do nothing towards actual healing or repairing your skin, which keeps you looking young and radiant with truly healthy skin instead of a cover up.
